Music video flashback, pt 2
I may have watched more MTV in 1989 than any other year. Highlights for me included “Like a Prayer” and “We Didn't Start the Fire,” but Prince’s “Batdance” figures heavily in my memories. Let me warn you: This is a complete piece of crap. It’s shockingly bad, even for Prince, whose sense of good taste is always in question. But watching this transports me right back to my friend Jennifer’s basement rec room, with the wood paneling and leather sectional and endless hours of MTV, back when MTV played music.

Did you see the New Yorker story on him? He's even weirder than I thought, and I'm generally a fan of weird unless it veers to the right.
Here's a funny reaction to it.
And I still adore "Like a Prayer."
Madonna had such a sense of freedom and largesse about her. Prince had some of the same stuff going on thematically, and even visually and musically, but he always seemed more closed-in and ego-bound, sort of controlling in the way he conveyed his aesthetic.
I haven't seen the New Yorker, but that sure sounds weird. I knew he was odd and maybe sort of crazy, but it's hard to believe Prince of all people would be against the gays. It's too bad because I think some of his music kicks ass, and I do find him sexy, in a weird, androgynous, egomaniac kind of way.
Madonna is great. You're right about the similarities between them, especially in the late '80s and early '90s. Madonna has obviously been much better at evolving successfully in her style and remaining relevant.
